Bong Joon Ho’s phenomenal breakthrough film is the first in which the director collaborated with actor Song Kang-ho, who Bong has called his “muse.” Inspired by a true story, Memories of Murder centers around the gruesome serial killings of women in South Korea in the 1980s, investigated by Doo-man (Song), a detective who relies on instinct rather than factual objectives. Bong’s vision, which challenges conventional components of storytelling and blurs the boundaries between genre categories, is meticulously orchestrated in his second feature, which breathed a new sensation into the world of Korean cinema in the early 2000s.
