Director Quentin Tarantino (with cowriter Roger Avary) won an Oscar for his hugely influential original screenplay telling intertwining, darkly comic tales of Southern California crime. An expertly chosen cast brought the script to life, with nominated performances by John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson—in his star-making turn as the acerbic, Bible-quoting hit man Jules—as well as memorable roles for a galaxy of performers including Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Rosanna Arquette, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, and Ving Rhames. The film received seven nominations including Best Picture and Directing.
