Margot Lee Shetterly’s 2016 nonfiction book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race tells the inspiring true story of the women employed by NASA as “human computers” to make the necessary engineering calculations to send the Apollo astronauts to the moon. Writer-director Theodore Melfi and casting director Victoria Thomas assembled the impressive cast led by three remarkable talents portraying the real-life mathematicians: Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Goble, Octavia Spencer in an Oscar-nominated performance as Dorothy Vaughan, and Grammy-nominated recording artist Janelle Monáe in her first leading film role as Mary Jackson.
