Bong Joon Ho’s first English-language feature is a postapocalyptic epic based on Le Transperceneige, a graphic novel series by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette. It takes place on a nonstop express train that carries the survivors of the Earth’s new ice age, a disaster caused by a failed experiment to address global warming. The passengers are segregated into different socioeconomic categories, with the rich at the front of the train and the poor crammed in the rear cars. Bong’s dystopian fantasy is realized with horror, humor, and magnificent visuals, and is coded with social commentary. It features a stellar cast including Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, and Song Kang-ho.
